“Thanks God it’s today!”
Most employees always wait for Friday to come, I knew that. I was one of those who always wait for weekends when I was still working. I’m sure everybody is very much familiar with the phrase “Thanks God it’s Friday!” or its acronym TGIF!
Perhaps, there maybe no malicious or bad intention from the guy who coined the phrase, but an article I read years ago has helped me put my thoughts on the right perspective.
First, why thank God only on Fridays? He has given us 7 days a week to enjoy everything that He has given us. 7 precious opportunities for us to grow and nourished our relationship with Him. Sometimes, what is sad about this is that although the phrase ‘thanks’ Him for Friday, it doesn’t necessarily follow that He is included in the plan to celebrate the occurrence of the day.
The phrase only means that we have made it through the week and we can look forward to unwind after a week-long of stressful work. Night outs with friends, weekend of relaxation, house repairs maybe, and some other pre-planned activities.
But is He included in those plans? When we say the phrase - TGIF, do we really mean it? Or is the mention of His name only incidental to the phrase?
Second, the fact that we look forward for Friday to come may indirectly send a message to our us that it is the most exciting or important day of the week. Making the rest of the week, hurdles that we just need to jump over to get to our target day. That means, we might be dragging ourself from Monday just to get through to Friday.
The article further concludes that instead thanking God for Friday, we should thank him everyday. And instead of saying “Thanks God it’s Friday!” we should say “Thanks God it’s TODAY!”
For every new day is a gift. To grow and know more about Him, to correct the errors we made yesterday, it brings new hope and another 24 hours to enjoy living and being with our love ones.
Thanks God it’s TODAY!
And today, we can do so much!
